AbstractA mathematical model for simulating BOD and DO levels was developed for application in the Tanshui River Basin. An optimization model was also formulated to obtain water pollution control policies for Tanshui River Basin. The objective consisted of maximizing the allowable BOD loading without violating the DO standards, thus using the assimilative capacity of the river to its maximum. River water quality parameters were collected and/or analyzed, and used for obtaining results from the model. It was observed that additional data on hydraulics, deoxygenation, reaeration coefficients, waste loadings are required in order to obtain better results for developing water pollution control strategies for present and future uses.
