AbstractThe objective of the study was to identify the factors that affect variation in the socio-economic conditions of the settlements located on the trunk routes leading into the Metropolitan Area of Lahore. Results of tests and analysis showed that the routes on the north-west and east are comparatively well off than routes in the south and south-east, in terms of income, education, occupation and farming. The physical growth of Lahore is taking place in southern direction and as such this area needs a more deeper study, for the welfare of the people living there and also for the benefit of greater Lahore Metropolis. On the basis of the results obtained from the analysis, it was recommended that a separate cell be set up within the organizational structure of the Lahore Development Authority to deal specially with the improvement of the socio-economic welfare of the fringe area population and to implement direct or indirect measure towards providing more jobs and land owner ship or tenancy rights to the people. It was also recommended that further research be directed to the settlements which fall far away from the trunk routes and which do not have proper road system, although they may be situated in the same three zones as in this study.
