Abstract | The growth centre approach which advances industrialization and stimulates growth has been adapted by planners in the developing countries as a regional planning instrument to attain socio-economic development in the city and its surrounding rural areas. This study examines the socio-economic impact of Kandy as a growth centre on the surrounding rural areas in order to determine what impacts and effects are favorable or unfavorable in the development of the surrounding rural areas. The Kandy city is the second largest city and is located in the central part of Sri Lanka. There are two sections in the analysis of the impact. The first examines the economic impact which is generated by factories, factory workers, commuter workers, government and service sector and rural and urban residents in the surrounding rural areas. Multiplier analysis is employed to measure the economic impact. The second part comprise the actual socio-economic effects and social development of surrounding rural areas. Due to the location of industries and the social service in the city, the significant changes such as occupation, income, migration, commuting pattern and ·utilization of social service and social development are discussed in the second part. The study showed that Kandy growth centre created more unfavorable effects than favorable effects on the rural areas. Finally, "the implications for planning and a few topics for further studies are discussed. |
