AbstractThis study is concerned with rural water consumption and supply management in Tambon Sara Krue of Amphoe Nong Sua in Pathun Thani Province, Thailand. It describes the pattern of rural water use, evaluates the factors affecting rural water consumption and appraises the need for improvement in rural water supply management and the impact which the need for improvement can have on the social and economic well-being of the community in Tambon Sara Krue. An attempt is also made regarding the feasibility of an organized rural water supply system for Tambon Sara Krue. Simple descriptive statistics were used to present the pattern of rural water consumption. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was applied to analyze the factors affecting per capita rural water consumption. The variables which were found to be significantly associated with the per capita rural water consumption were household size, average household age, level of education and average household income. The need for improvement in rural water supply management was tested by chi-square test. The results showed villagers' degree of satisfaction, their desire and willingness to contribute to the improvement and their awareness of sickness were significantly associated with the need for rural water supply improvement. The impact of an improved rural water supply programme was then verified by chi-square tests against medical cost, cleanliness, water conservation, labor productivity, standard of living community health and people attraction. Except for labor productivity, all the variables were found to be significant. In assessing the feasibility of an organized rural water supply system for Tambon Sara Krue, the factors considered were the villagers' interest in forming an organized rural water supply system. Their willingness in joining an organized rural water supply programme, in forming an association without government intervention and in contributing towards an improved rural water supply system, their preference of agencies to undertake rural water supply improvement, the benefits and costs of an organized rural water supply system and the constraints that may hinder the feasibility of an organized rural water supply system.
