AbstractThe need for dispersing manufacturing industries throughout the country has been realized. This study endeavors to identify and investigate the various factors affecting the location of industries - both tangible and intangible. These factors are discussed especially with reference to their spatial variability. An operational model is formulated for locating an industry in a country optimizing the benefit of the entrepreneur. First a model is developed based on only the quantitative economic (objective) factors, and later, the subjective factors are introduced into the model. A method has been devised to evaluate the intangible factors and to combine them with the quantitative factors to obtain an overall location measure (which is to be optimized). The government activities for decentralization of industries have been discussed and the model has been applied to hypothetical simulated data to illustrate its utility. The conclusion is that the location of industry is an important aspect of regional development and proper incentive strategy and industrial policy has to be worked out by the government for spreading industries. The model developed can be used as a tool to determine the optimum plant location for a new project and also to establish priorities among the feasible locations.
