Abstract | A finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of elastic perfectly plastic plane frames undergoing small deformations, using an elastic-viscoplastic model. Incorporated in the formulation are the modal coordinate transformation technique for solving dynamic problems and a sub structuring scheme for static analyses, which avoids the need to modify the transformation relation between the internal and boundary degrees of freedom of each substructure during yielding. The Newmark average acceleration scheme is used in solving the incremental equations of motion. An implicit second order Runge-Kutta method together with the Newton-Raphson technique and a local time step sub-incrementing procedure are employed in solving the non linear constitutive equations. Numerical Examples given show that accurate results can be obtained with a few lower modes included in dynamic analyses. Stable results are obtained even with large time steps. Finally, the formulation with sub structuring gives almost the same result as the direct formulation in static analyses, and static collapse loads can be predicted with practical accuracy. A criterion for obtaining the static collapse load is also proposed. |
