AbstractThe vertical buckling of long rails due to constrained thermal axial force is considered. The governing equation and its general solutions of buckled long rails with initial imperfections are derived by ordinary beam column formula. The coefficients of the solutions are determined by two sets of boundary conditions, which are the boundary conditions of a symmetric mode and an unsymmetric mode. Then the critical buckling axial force and al so the critical temperature increase governed by the symmetric mode are determined. This critical axial force is the bifurcation load influenced quite sensitively by initial imperfection. Several values of rail weights and also the initial imperfections are used in numerical calculations.
