AbstractThe main purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of using overdosed retarders in an initially cast concrete for improving the bond strength at joints in concrete structures. The strength at joint between unusually retarded concrete and later cast concrete was tested at 7 days and 28 days. The strength was evaluated by the splitting tensile strength at the joint. The results were compared with the inherent strengths of the two concretes joined together. The variables examined include water-cement ratio, consistency and time at which joining was made. It was found that when the dosage and kind of retarders and joining time are properly selected, there is practically no reduction in strength at joint even when the joining is made after a considerable elapsed time, say 15 hrs. The existence of laitance at the joining surface had no adverse effect on the magnitude of the bond strength. It was al so found the use of water-reducing type retarder is preferable for the purpose of set-retardation of initially cast concrete when the new technique studied in this work is employed for joining concretes.
