AbstractIn this study the solutions of the vertical displacements and the normal stresses of a static uniform rectangular patch load inside an elastic half-space, both at the center and the integral average of the load, are studied by the technique of Fourier transforms; and the solutions are obtained mostly in terms of singly finite integral suitable for numerical computation. The characteristics of this problem are governed by four parameters, the Poisson's ratio of the half-space, aspect ratio of loading area, depth of the load from the surface to a half width ratio, and depth to a half width ratio. The case of a static uniform rectangular patch load on the surface of an elastic half-space is also derived in this study and the solution is identical to that obtained by Thomson and Koburi, Some numerical results of the displacement and normal stress, in the direction normal to the surface of the half-space, are plotted versus the depth as illustrative examples.
