AbstractThe main objectives of the study are to determine numerically the influence of a sustained load on the stiffness and load carrying capacity of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete columns. By describing the equilibrium and compatibility equations a unified numerical procedure can be formulated for problems with combined geometric and material nonlinearity such as viscoelastic city, cracking of concrete, .and the effect of yielding of steel. A finite element model and corresponding numerical technique are developed in detail. Numerical results are then presented for the maximum displacements of simply supported columns under several loading conditions. The main variables considered are the percentage of longitudinal reinforcement, the slenderness ratio, the eccentricity of the axial load, and time. Comparison of this procedure with some experimental results and the current A.C.I. recommendations is also included.
