AbstractThe response of an isotropic homogeneous elastic half-space for a dynamic uniform circular patch load inside it, is studied here. The half space is divided into two regions, one above the horizontal plane where the load is, and the other below that plane. General solutions for stresses and displacements of both regions are obtained by reducing the governing equations into ordinary differential equations, using the techniques of Hankel transforms. First the problem is analyzed without any loads and formulae representing a system of free Rayleigh waves are obtained. Later, it is analyzed for a dyna mic uniform load inside the half- space, by representing the load boundary condition as a Fourier-Bessel integral. Superposing the two waves, general solutions are obtained in terms of a single infinite integral. The asymptotic forms of infinite integrals, which are mostly standard infinite integrals, are established, using which the results are presented in the form of definite integrals by subtracting those asymptotic forms from the corresponding infinite integrals. The characteristics of this problem is governed by three parameters called the Poisson's ratio of the half-space, frequency of the oscillatory load and the ratio of depth of the load from the surface to radius of the load area. As an illustrative example numerical results are obtained for vertical displacements and normal stresses along the center line normal to the surface of the half-space for one fixed value of Poisson's ratio and frequency and for three different values of depths of the load. The plots for the corresponding integral averages against the depths along the center line, are also presented.
