Abstract | A finite difference method based on P-M-o relationship is developed to analyze a reinforced concrete frame, taking material and geometric nonlinearity into account. The calculated results by this method show a good agreement with existing experimental results. The maximum bending moments of the columns obtained by the numerical studies of 63 reinforced concrete columns in frames are compared with those calculated according to ACI 318- 71 recommendations. It is found, in general, the recommendations over-estimate ·the maximum bending moment of a reinforced concrete column, especially in the non-sway frame system, but under-estimate that in an exterior column sway frame system with long spanned beams. Afterwards, an empirical formula that can be used to predict the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete columns under frame actions is proposed. In most of the cases, the range of divergencies of the results calculated by this empirical formula from those by numerical studies is between ±20% . |
