AbstractGeneral behaviour of a waffle slab subjected to transverse loading is investigated. The relative importance of each waffle slab component is examined by a complete three-dimensional finite element analysis. Different deformation modes of a typical waffle slab cell are investigated in an attempt to detect the significant modes under transverse loading. A macroelement concept is introduced, taking advantage of the repetitive nature of waffle slab cells and the fact that less significant degrees- of freedom can be eliminated before assembly either by constraints or static condensation. The result is a macroelement cell with fewer degrees-of- freedom, which is capable of accurately representing the waffle slab bending behaviour. Two types of macroelernents are presented, one with 3 and the other with 5 degrees-of-freedom per node. Both of these macroelements in clude torsion effects in the beam components, although only the latter permits local plate action in them. Results from tested example show good performance of both macroelements. Significant mode shapes of the first macro element are found to be similar to those obtained from the complete three dimensional analysis. Considerable amounts of computer time and storage are saved with almost no loss in accuracy.
