AbstractThe main purpose of this research is to further examine the feasibility of using overdosed retarders for improving the bond strength at construction joints in concrete structures. Extraordinarily set- retarded concretes were cast on plain concretes. The bond strength was examined by changing consistency of concrete, do sage of retarders and joining time. The bond strength at the joint was tested at 7 and 28 days by splitting tensile strength test. The results were compared with the inherent strengths of the two concretes joined together. Main conclusions are as follows: 1. Almost complete joining of concretes can be attained provided that they are joined together properly while they are still in green states. 2. The use of retarders of high water-reducing ability is preferable for the purpose of improving the bond strength.
