AbstractThe existing system of serially linked reservoirs in the Ta Chia river basin is simulated using two model s. One is the HEG-3 model and the other model incorporates the release policy of the Taiwan Power Company. Many feasible rule curves are considered in the simulation. Using the same models the system with Sung Mao reservoir is then simulated. Three feasible reservoir capacities of 20, 30 and 40 MCM for Sung Mao reservoir are investigated. The sensitivity of the system responses to the rule curves of Te Chi and Sung Mao reservoirs is studied. The increase in system energy generation is found to depend almost totally on the energy generated at the Sung Mao powerplant. No significant reduction in spills is achieved by the addition of a reservoir at Sung Mao. The release rules are the important factors in the operation of this system rather than the rule curves, as the system is hardly sensitive to the rule curves of the reservoirs. Recommendations are made on the selection of the Sung Mao reservoir capacity and the most feasible operation of the system.
