Abstract | The development of improved irrigation management procedures for existing irrigation project and the design of new projects can greatly benefit from the measurement of irrigation efficiencies and water losses. The study was conducted in the dry season to evaluate the present performance of the Lam Pao Irrigation Project in the Northeastern Thailand by the determination of existing conveyance, distribution and field application efficiencies. Field water use efficiency and seepage and percolation losses from lowland paddies were also estimated. Average conveyance efficiency was found to be 45% for the project with a range of 53% to 80%. But for lined canal, the observed conveyance efficiency was lower due to higher operational losses and probably cracks in the canal lining. An average tertiary distribution efficiency of 63% with a low value of 50% and a high value of 72% were observed in sandy loam soil. Application efficiency was measured at traditionally farmed field and an average efficiency of 51% was obtained with a range of 16 to 97%. Unregulated flow and an isolated small cultivated area have resulted in low field water use efficiency. An average of 3.3 mm/day is the observed seepage and percolation loss from the lowland paddy. The overall project efficiency was 14% and this low value is due to uncontrolled flow according to demand, absence of f l ow regulating gates and measuring devices at the tertiary turnouts and finally lack of trained field personnel. Constraints to efficient system operation were discussed and possible methods to improve the performance were suggested. |
