AbstractIn the recent years, the focus on the use of Internet of things (loT) is beneficial, where the electronic enabled devices can be easily connected to the internet. API plays a major role in connecting the Io T devices over the web. As it is still initial stage, many vendors who provide an internet-connected device and services, they come up with their proprietary protocols which targeted for only their applications. Hence, it is hard for the interoperability with other vendors or another system. In such case, there is a need for an Open standard which provides certain interface standard necessary for communicating with various loT devices. The OGC is the organization where it provides a standard interface to connect observation of sensors or IoT devices over the web. The Sensor Things API is a recent OGC standard which provides a geospatial-enabled and unified way to interconnect the IoT devices, data, and applications over the Web. However, since it is a new standard, there is no real case study or detailed assessment of the API in various ways such as easy to use in comparison with another standard. In this research, to assert the usefulness of the API, a prototype weather station platform has been developed and attempted to publish observation data to web service via Sensor Things API. The interoperability of Sensor Things API was examed and compared with other standards including OGC SOS and Thing Speak. As a result, Sensor Things API showed that it is pretty much light- weight than SOS as it used JSON as a data format. It is also easy to develop and utilize as it used HTTP restful service. However, it is still a lack of security features. Developers are required to design and implement by themselves. Regardless, Sensor Things API still one of the new approach which is useful in the development of sensor network systems.
