AbstractDrought levies huge negative impact on the socio-economic, demographic and ecological features of region prone to it. Southern India experiences frequent droughts. In this study, an attempt is made to integrate Heat Index (HI) with existing agricultural drought indices such as GMI, NDVI,TVX so as to evaluate most accurate index to monitor drought specific to a semi-arid regions alike Telangana. MODIS satellite data of 1000m and 250m resolution for thirteen years (2004-2016) have been used to calculate LST, NDVI and TVX. The weather data is taken from IMD installed AWS's in Telangana to calculate Heat Index and GMI. Then correlation between Heat index and GMI is sought out along with other satellite obtained indices respectively. The variations in their correlation with time suggest HI to be a good drought monitoring indicator. The satellite data is validated by using MNCFC indices data that gave RMSE value as 0.019. The drought years indicated by above indices are validated by ground data collected from people and articles from gazettes and reports. Heat Index is the best drought monitoring indicator because it takes moisture (mainly responsible for Global warming) also into consideration unlike other traditional indicators, considers only temperature. The proposed heat index based modified HYSADI (combo of agro-meteorological and satellite data integrated with HI) can depict the health of biomass at any given time makes it useful in all tropical region with frequent heat waves and high humid areas like Thailand etc. It will be a huge boost for legible Insurance companies to insure the eligible drought-affected farmers.
