Abstract | This study focuses on the impacts of floods on the residents of the Bansighat informal settlement in Kathmandu, Nepal. It examines how gender influences vulnerability and adaptation to flood risks. This is a qualitative study in which Indepth Interview and Key Informant Interview were conducted. The research explores how social roles, decision-making power, and resource access affect flood risks for both women and men. The study reveals that residents use different strategies to adapt to flooding, such as elevating their homes and generating income through women's activities. However, these adaptation strategies can challenge traditional gender roles and relations. Women face more significant risks concerning vulnerable housing and displacement while also being responsible for their family's safety. Disruptions to livelihoods and social networks further exacerbate gender inequalities. Adaptation strategies that empower women economically promote shared decision-making and community resilience. Therefore, comprehensive policies are necessary to empower women, support livelihoods, strengthen social networks, and promote gender-equitable adaptation strategies to build resilience in informal settlements. |
