Abstract | An experimental study to investigate the flow phenomena in an expanding channel is presented. This research work would contribute about the spreading behavior of the flow in designing transition structures, where it is necessary to avoid sufficient headless, erosion and sedimentation. The spreading behavior of the flow is important to be investigated before the physical implementation of t he transition. Observations were conducted, using four different angles of divergence, and for each angle of divergence three different discharges. The experimental results agreed with theoretical results as well as with experiments carried out previously. The main flow velocity variation in longitudinal direction was observed, which supported with evidence, that the flow can be treated as one-dimensional in expanding channels under sub-critical flow conditions. The results agreed well with the flow phenomenon in t he case of retarded flow where the separation is linearly related with the angle of divergence and the discharge. This experimental study contributed sufficient evidence about the behavior of the diverging angle in conjunction with the discharge. |
