Abstract | The purpose of the present study is to develop an optimization model for the design of a multi-purpose multi-reservoir system, particularly for the La-.nga river project in Vietnam. Due to the importance of the operation policy on system outputs, dynamic programming techniques were applied in the optimization model to determine the optimum operation policy for each combination of the system parameters, which can yield the maximum benefit from energy production with irrigation as a constraint. Uniform grid sampling was then used as a screening model to reveal important characteristics of the response surface of the system. The best combination obtained in this sampling served as the initial point for next search using the steepest ascent method in seeking out the optimum design of the system. The response of the optimum design of the system, obtained from the optimization by using deterministic streamflow data generated from a short record of historical data, was also studied under different sequences of generated streamflow. The optimization model was applied to the La-Nga water resources system which is composed of 3 reservoirs and 3 powerhouses. To fully utilize the water resources in the La-Nga river with consideration that the agricultural development has been given the first priority in economic plans of the country at the present time, the trans-basin diversion for irrigation in the Phan Thiet Plain was taken into account in the study, at the same time with the satisfaction of irrigation demand in the La-Nga Valley. The water released for irrigation is also used for power generation as the second purpose of the project. |
