AbstractThe characteristics of buoy motions such as heaving, swaying and rolling due to waves can be analyzed to some degree based on the potential flow theory. But t he magnitudes of buoy motions around the resonance condition cannot be evaluated by such a theory where inviscid fluid is assumed. In this study, it is attempted t o introduce the effect of fluid viscosity or the drag force into the potential theory in order to analyze the motions of a circular cylindrical buoy. Based on the newly developed method, computations are carried out for various conditions. The results thus calculated show much better agreements with the experimental values in comparison with those given by the previous potential theory.
