AbstractVietnamese - Russian Joint Venture Vietsovpetro (Vietsovpetro, VSP) is a unique organization created in 1981 as a result of Inter-Governmental Agreement between the Former Soviet Union and S.R. of Vietnam. After 35 years of development and stable operations, Vietsovpetro has started to show signs of its decline. Furthermore, unstable crude oil prices in the last two years have reduced its revenue significantly, whilst the operations costs have remained unchanged. It is now unavoidable that radical changes in strategy are to be applied to boost the company’s recovery. The aim of this study is to open up a discussion key issues that Vietsovpetro currently faces, both internally and externally. First, traditional strategy toolkit and frameworks such a SWOT analysis and Porter’s Five Forces are used to review the company’s current position.Secondly, a series of interviews had been conducted with a number of junior managers across functional departments of Vietsovpetro to get a deeper understanding of what elements Vietsovpetro’s employees identify as core issues that require change. The analysis of all the data collected confirms that Vietsovpetro is in an urgent need of strategic change. Using the results of the study, this paper then proceeds to create a simple strategic framework that recommends a number of initiatives that Vietsovpetro can apply should it choose to revise its strategy.
