Abstract | Flood water in the Lower Chao Phya River plain which seriously damage the Bangkok City are produced by the high water discharges from the northern part of Thailand and high tides in the Gulf of Thailand. The changes of water levels due to the presence of the flood protection schemes on the Lower Part of the Chao Phya River from Bangsai (Km 112) to Paknam (Km 8) are investigated using a mathematical model consisting of the unsteady free surface flow equations. The equations are solved numerically using the finite difference approximation of the implicit scheme. The flood protection schemes considered are dikes along the river banks, diversion channel at Bangsai and tidal barrier at Km 28. The applicability of the model in describing the existing river flow conditions during flood periods in 1970 and 1975. The changes of water levels under various protection schemes from Bangsai to Paknam are presented for the flood in 1975. Recommendations on the appropriate flood protection schemes are given. The partial diking from Km 32 to Km 60 with the diversion of 625 cubic meters per second at Bangsai which is equivalent to 25 percent of flood discharge in 1975 are found to be the most effective flood protection scheme for the Lower Reach of the Chao Phya River. |
