AbstractWhat is the most severe typhoon. that can probably occur in a particular region? What would be the maximum intensity of its accompanying rainfall and its probable areal distribution around the center of the typhoon? Answers to such questions are needed for the effective design of hydraulic structures, flood control and typhoon protective works and in planning to avert future typhoon disasters. In the absence of extensive meteorological data and thermodynamic information, that govern the complex relationship of typhoon and its accompanying rainfall, an attempt has been made to study the available data statistically with a view of extrapolating the trends of the observed frequencies to serve as guide to engineers in the planning, design and evaluation of typhoon protective works, and various hydraulic structures. Various typhoon characteristics were estimated and the frequency analysis of CPI produced a Profile of Variation of CPI with latitude in the 3 zones. Intense typhoon rainfalls occur over a wide range of durations with associated recurrence intervals. There are many combinations of typhoon rainfall durations and recurrence intervals and a multiplicity of maps would result if all were analyzed individually. To minimize computation and maintains consistency, empirical relationship between typhoon rainfall intensity, duration and recurrence interval was derived using the given data. An empirical relationship relating the average rainfall, have over an area A, for a given duration to the maximum point rainfall depth near the center of typhoon was also obtained.
