Abstract | The main purpose of this study is to introduce and theoretically consider a conical cement mortar rice bin which does not require any steel reinforcement, the highest cost item; and to evaluate its performance for the storage of paddy under local conditions in the rural areas. Theoretically, the bin is treated as an axisymmetric conical shell and analyzed under membrane and bending stresses by means of thin shell theory. The stress resultants and displacements determined are very small compared with the strength of cement mortar. The base plate of this bin is treated as a circular plate subjected to the axisymmetric paddy load. Assuming that the embankment on which this bin stands does not settle uniformly, bamboo is required as the reinforcements of the base plate. Load test for the plate was also determined for check its soundness. Two prototype bins of 2.80 cubic meters capacity with thatch roofed shelter to protect the bin from sunlight and rainfall were constructed at the Asian Institute of Technology. These bins were stored with fresh harvested paddy. One bin is opened monthly in order to take samples to be used in quality determination and biological tests. The other bin is being treated as close as possible to real practice so it is hermetically sealed. The quality of the paddy in the second bin will be tested after one year of hermetic storage. |
