AbstractA simplified treatment of vibration of multilayered orthotropic beams in plane stress is investigated. A theory is firstly derived for simply supported beams, and then extended to the cases of other end conditions. Behaviors of a single-layered beam are investigated first, and then extended to the case of a multilayered beam. Simplified methods; one of which is treating a thinly l aminated beam as a single-layered one by introducing the stress couple, and the other dividing the layers into a number of groups; are considered. Numerical results of fundamental frequency are presented in figures for single-layered beams with different end conditions, together with the results obtained by the elementary beam theory and Timoshenko's beam theory. A comparison of results with the exact solution for a sandwich beam composed of aluminum and plastics is made.
