AbstractTheoretical expressions for predicting the spacing and width of cracks in reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete beams in flexure are derived, A parametric study was conducted in order to examine the influence of the bond stress, steel percentage, eccentricity of reinforcement, steel diameter and concrete strength for both reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete and prestress level for prestressed concrete on the width and spacing of flexure cracks. The results obtained from the theoretical analysis indicate that in both reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete, the spacing and width of flexure cracks are significantly affected by the bond stress and the diameter of the reinforcement. The prestressing force and the concrete strength are the main factors that affect the spacing and width of cracks for prestressed concrete beams. The cracking moment of the beam is significantly influenced by the magnitude of the prestressing force and the ultimate com pressive strength of the concrete.
