Abstract | This study describes an investigation of the mechanical properties of bagasse reinforced cement paste composite. Bagasse fibers were selected as reinforcement which were randomly oriented and uniformly distributed in the cement paste matrix. Bagasse fiber-cement composite with varying fiber content s were tested in direct tension, axial compression, flexure and torsion. Tests were also conducted to evaluate the performance of the materials with regard to water absorption, expansion, shrinkage, combustibility, impact· resistance, permeability and durability. The experimental results on the mechanical properties of the composite were compared with the analytically predicted values based on the theoretical analysis presented by Pakotiprapha . Reasonably good agreement exists between the experimental and the theoretical values. The investigations showed the feasibility of using bagasse fiber cement paste composite as a roofing material especially in developing nations where sugar cane is abundant and bagasse is considered a waste material. |
