Abstract | The analysis of cantilever cylindrical shells subjected to an assumed wind pressure is presented. The wind pressure is expressed in the form of Fourier series with seven terms. The axisymmetrical component of the load is analyzed by a classical bending theory whereas the nonaxisymmetrical one is worked out by Billington's simplified theory. The simplified theory is derived based on the assumption that the cylinder is inextensible in circumferential direction. The governing equations are of sixth order with three boundary conditions at each end of the cylinder. The complementary solution is assumed in form of Fourier series being periodic in circumferential direction so that the order of the characteristic equation is six and the particu l ar solution is assumed to be a double Fourier series. A complete solution i s obtained by superimposing the solution of the nonaxisymmetrical load component, which is the summation of particular and complementary solution, t o the solution of the axisymmetrical load component. The numerical work is studied using a practical range of parameters, which are Poisson's ratio, radius t o thickness ratios and length to radius ratios. Numerical results are presented in form of charts for the purpose of analysis and design of such structures. |
