AbstractIn deep coastal aquifers, sea water generally underlies the flowing fresh water. Any fluctuation of water table effects the equilibrium posi tion of interface between salt and fresh waters. Theoretical solutions for fluctuations of free surface subjected to four exciting functions, to name, step rise, linear rise, modified hydrograph and sinusoidal wave, have been obtained using Laplace transform. The movement of interface subjected to the fluctuating free surface has been studied using numerical model. Results of the study have been verified using experimental results. Experiments were conducted on Hele Shaw model using lubricating oil and fresh water to simulate fresh water and sea water respectively.
