Abstract | The theory of shot noise processes was applied to streamflow modelling in an attempt to reproduce the asymmetrical character of natural streamflow hydrographs. The performance of this relatively new type of model is evaluated by this study. Three variants of the shot noise model were fitted to 23 years of daily streamflow records of one of the gauging stations in Northern Thailand. It was found that the present shot noise models indeed reproduce the steep rises and gradual recessions in hydro graphs. They preserve the mean, variance, and first order autocorrelation coefficient, but were not able to reproduce the distribution of annual floods. The skewness was nearly preserved by one of the models. |
