Abstract | An attempt has been made t o treat combined paper mil l waste and domestic sewage (in a 1:1 volumetric ratio) with subsequent single cell protein (SCP) production by three yeast systems: C. utilis, Rh. glutinis, and mixed yeast culture. Because of the low organic strength of the wastewater, paper fiber fines were subjected to acid hydrolysis to increase both COD and carbohydrate content of the combined waste. The process, however, was found to be economically unsound inasmuch as asceptic conditions had to be maintained; but SCP recovery and wastewater treatment were technically feasible. C. utilis effected the highest COD removal (60-79%) while Rh. glutinis effected the highest nutrient removal (57-60% for nitrogen removal and 72-74% for phosphorus removal). C. utilis was the faster growing organism on the combined waste, with substrate removal time of 5-8 hours; Rh. glutinis was relatively slower with 16-20 hours. It has not been possible to maintain a 1:1 ratio of C. utilis and Rh. glutinis yeast population in mixed culture since, C. utilis, the faster growing organism, tend to predominate in the course of the batch runs. The SCP product had a crude protein content of 40% at the maximum (for C. utilis) but it has been found that protein biosynthesis is highly dependent on aeration efficiency of the system. |
