AbstractUsing the concept of the specific rate of breakage, the breakage characteristics of the soybean have been studied in a simple laboratory type hammer mill with a rectangular steel bar as a hammer. The effect of different variables such as the sieve size, moisture content and the temperature of the soybean, sample weight, mill rotation speed and the hammer length on the specific rate of breakage of soybean was experimentally determined. A one horse-power A.C. motor was used to operate the mill with suitable belt and pulley arrangement to vary the speed of rotation. The sieving of the soybean samples after grinding for known time was done by hand. Results are also reported on the effect of drying air temperature on the specific rate of breakage of soybean when dried from an initial moisture content of 25 percent to dry basis. The experimental results on the kinetics of soybean breakage in a small hammer mill showed that the breakage follows a first-order-law. The results clearly show that the concept of specific rate of breakage can be effectively used to evaluate the relative mechanical strength of the different soybean samples in order to determine their susceptibility to breakage.
