AbstractThe test embankment at Porn Prachul was constructed to assess the performance of sand drains at the site. The coefficient of consolidation determined by back calculation of the observed settlements using one dimensional analysis was found to be about twice that obtained from the laboratory methods. The piezometric draw down, which exists below 6 m , due to deep well pumping in the region is 'recharged' by the sand drains. The effectiveness of the sand drains is prominent within the layers to a depth of about 5 m and reduces with increasing depth. The observed settlements were greater than those computed by the one dimensional analysis.
