AbstractThis thesis reviews the literature about stability analysis of natural and cut slopes. Failure mechanism, factors leading to instability and types of slope failure are discussed with relevant examples. The field and laboratory investigations to collect data required for analysis are given in considerable detail. Limit equilibrium methods of stability analysis are presented. A critical study of these methods is made. Stability problems of slopes in different types of materials are discussed and appropriate methods of shear strength determination and stability are suggested. Cases of failure in each type of material are collected and presented in a form useful to practicing engineers.
