AbstractThis study investigates the patterns of rural water use, the factors affecting rural water consumption, the perception and attitude of villagers towards an improved rural water system and the villagers' preferences and priorities for improvement in Faisalabad District, Pakistan, Simple descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data, The statistical analysis revealed that of the factors affecting rural water consumption, both at the household and village levels; the factors that have a significant influence on variations associated with per capita water demand were household size, number of water supply sources and level of education. In evaluating the perception and attitude of villagers towards an improved rural water supply system, it was found that cleanliness, water quality, water supply existing service were the most important factors. These results reflected the high level of dissatisfaction expressed by the villagers related to the poor service and poor water quality found in Faisalabad. The preference for improving the rural water supply management called for a combination of the village committee in partner ship with government help while the priority for water supply improvement was directed towards improving the existing service and improving the standard of water quality management.
