| Abstract | This research is aimed at evaluative responsiveness to people' s needs in resettlement planning in five Asian countries. Special emphasis has been placed on the experience in R.O.C. The social, economic, physical and policy aspects of five selected resettlement projects in R.0.C, have been investigated. This study addresses the issues and policies involved in each of the five resettlement projects in R.O.C. The main issues are: housing size and jerry-building, economic difficulties after resettlement and differences neighborhood relationship. Hence it is suggested to find out resettlers' urgent needs, to improve the resettlement regulations to correspond with rising standards of living, to maintain rigid superintendence of housing building, to create more employment opportunities, to promote community organization, and to improve irrigation system. Aside from these, an essential rule in resettlement project planning is to enable the resettles to follow the same style of living as before to prevent maladjustments-at the new site. A comprehensive analysis of seventeen case studies from five Asian countries was undertaken. Major physical, socio-economic and political factors affecting each project were considered. The effect of increase/ decrease in income, quality of life, maintenance of old socio-economic structure and cultural traditions, health conditions, age of projects, grant of land tenure and physical arrangements in the overall success of resettlement projects are demonstrated, |
