AbstractSand from two different beaches in Thailand as well as natural river sand were tested for their chemical and mechanical properties. Concrete samples with the two different mix proportions were cast by using three different types of sand and the mechanical properties of fresh and hardened concrete, namely, workability, compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, creep and shrinkage were investigated. The chemical analysis indicated that, for both types of beach sand, the percentage of total salts content expressed in terms of the weight of cement was lower than the maximum allowable value specified in British Code, CPllO ; Part 1 ; 1972. Hence, the two types of beach sand investigated in this study could suitably be used in ordinary reinforced concrete work. Test results of hardened concrete indicated that, for water-cement ratio 0.5, the 28-day compressive strengths of concrete made with beach sand from Pattaya and Huahin were approximately 78% and 90% of those concrete made with natural river sand respectively. For a richer mix, the compressive strengths of concrete made with beach sand from Pattaya were 87% of those of concrete made with river sand, whereas the strengths of concrete made with beach sand from Huahin were roughly the same as those of concrete made with river sand. The indirect-tension test and flexure-test also gave similar results. In other words, concrete with fairly good quality can be made by using the two types of beach sand investigated.
