AbstractA general finite element formulation of a moving coordinate type, to determine the deformation and the ultimate load of planar structures in presented. Theory of incremental energy with the large deflection theory is used in this formulation. The validity of the formulation is verified by comparing the solutions obtained by this method, with the available results. This finite element formulation with the aid of the effective width concept is used to develop strength curves, for thin-walled box columns pinned at both ends. A design formula to compute the approximate ultimate load of a thin-walled column is also presented.
