AbstractA theoretical study is presented on the elastic and inelastic local buckling strength of cylindrical shells under axial compression. The effect of residual stress due to the forming process of the cylindrical shell, is mainly given attention. The finite strip method is employed to obtain the stiffness and geometric matrices of a buckled cylindrical shell based on the deformation theory of plasticity. The analysis is performed under the boundary condition that the cylindrical shells are simply supported at the loading edges. In the numerical study, the critical radius over thickness ratio of the cylindrical shells are calculated and this is the major subject in this research.
