AbstractThis thesis deals with the computations of unsteady flow in a single rectangular canal with horizontal bed. Various end and other additional conditions are assumed for each problem. The method of equations of characteristics is employed in the graphical solutions of these problems, but for clarity they are worked out for specific numerical conditions. The canal to be solved is 12 feet sea in the form of stage hydrograph y= 4.5 + 1.5 Cos π/360 at the downstream end. The initial conditions are at t = 0, y = 6 feet and V = 0 ft/sec throughout. in Problem No. 1, the upstream end is assumed to be dead end where velocity of flow is always zero. Frictions of the bed and sides of the canal are ignored. In Problem No. 2, tge upstream end is assumed to be a constant-head reservoir where the total head of flow is always constant and friction is also ignored, In Problem No, 3, all properties of the canal are the same as in Problem NO. 2 except friction is taken into account. The solutions of these three problems are worked out in the form of stage and discharge hydrographs at various stations, i.e. stations x= 0, -2,500, -5,000, -7,500 and -10,000.
