| Abstract | A widespread need exists for a low-cost, low-lift pump for irrigating the rice fields of Thailand. The irrigation water is pumped from canals over low banks surrounding the fields. The need for these pumps is currently being fulfilled by a pump consisting of an endless chain of wooden paddles which are moved along a wooden trough. This study is a demonstration project in which a low-cost axial-flow pump was designed, fabricated, and tested as a possible alternative to the paddle pump. The following cost-saving features were incorporated in the design: (a) The pump was designed to be coupled readily to the Thai-style outboard motors. This design feature permits the same outboard motor to serve dual purposes and, in addition, permits the boat to be used as the foundation for the pumping station. (b) Locally available component parts were used throughout. Many of these parts, such as the propeller and Babbitt bearings, are also fabricated locally. (c) Precision-fit of parts was sacrificed. The pump was tested in the Hydraulic Laboratory of the SEATO Graduate School of Engineering but was not given a field test by pumping from a boat. Nevertheless, no obstacle was encountered at any stage of the study with the result that this type of pump and pumping operation appears to be feasible. |
