AbstractWhen a sand model is used for studying a problem involving the flow of water in a partially saturated medium, it is necessary that the relative effect of capillarity be the same in the model as in the prototype. This is to say that the saturation and relative permeability must be the sae for both systems at homologous points at homologus times. One of the conditions necessary to meet this requirement is that the functional relationship between relative permeability and relative capillary pressure be to select a suitable sand for a model of a particular prototype, it would be desirable to know how this functional relationship is affected by the easily measurable properties of the sand such as grain-size distribution, saturated permeability, and displacement pressure. the objective of this thesis was to explore the interrelation between relative permeability, capillary pressure, grain-size distribution, and a diensionless parameter Dₚ involving the saturated permeability, the displacement pressure and surface tension. The relative permeability as a function of capillary pressure was measured by the long-column method of Childs and George. The grain-size distribution was characterized by the geometric mean grain diameter and the geometric standard deviation of the grain diameter obtained by sieve analyses. Atotal of five sand samples were studied. The results showed very little correlation between the frain-size distribution and the relative permeability-capillary pressure curves. Some correlation was found between Dₚ and relative permeability.
