| Abstract | The thesis is a study of the recessional characteristics of the Upper Chao Phraya River system under normal and abnormal conditions. The records of six widely-dispersed stations were analysed to ascertain the areal as well as the seasonal variation in flow, the stations being put on a common basis for comparison by considering the discharge per unit area. In an average year flow recedes exponentially from 1 December to 1 April, from initial values of 2.5 to 8.3 lit/sec/km², decreasing by 14 to 25 per cent every 15 days, depending on location. There may be considerable variation in both specific discharge and rate of recession from one year to the next. Over a period of 15 days the flow may diminish by 45–70 per cent. Such extreme rates are not sustained much longer than 15 days. The discharge may fall to 0.13 lit/sec/km² for the entire catchment in a severe drought, while in the Wang catchment, where conditions are exceptionally severe, the flow may dry up altogether. With the exception of the Wang, flow seems to recede to between an eighth and a third of its normal value at the end of the dry season during a 50-year drought. |
