AbstractWhen two miscible liquids, originally separated by a sharp interface, move through a porous medium, the mechanisms of molecular diffusion, longitudinal dispersion and interphase mass transfer tend to alter the shape of the interface. Previous investigations have been concerned with constant fluid velocity; the present study deals with the problem when the fluid motion is unsteady. In the past, it has been established that the longitudinal dispersion coefficient is proportional to the product of the fluid velocity and the representative grain size over a broad range of Reynolds number. This relationship allows a transformation to be made in the differential equation describing the concentration distribution; in turn, it appears that a number of unsteady flow problems can be solved without difficulty. In the present investigation, experiments were conducted with a “falling head” type arrangement. It was found that concentration distributions can be accurately computed except at very low concentrations. It appears that a non-equilibrium adsorption relationship may account for the latter. It is believed that the results obtained in this study can be applied to problems of salinity intrusion in ground water.
