AbstractA combined theoretical and experimental study was made to determine the criterion for the self-priming by a hydraulic jump of a box culvert on a mild slope. Laboratory tests were conducted on a half-section culvert model mounted in a tilting flume 40 ft. long and 1 ft. wide. These tests indicated that the priming criterion defined by the theoretical analysis is valid for flow with discharges corresponding to the values of Yc/D between 0.72 and 0.83; for Yc/D greater than 0.83, priming occurred by surface waves. For discharges with Yc/D less than 0.72, priming was initiated by a hydraulic jump occurring in the region of the vena contracta of the free surface jet at the inlet of the culvert. Laboratory tests were conducted on three different entrance conditions in order to determine the effect of the wingwall configuration on the self-priming phenomenon.
