AbstractThe pressure recovery produced by the vertically downward flow of a sand–water mixture through a sudden expansion was determined from laboratory measurements and compared with that predicted by a theoretically derived equation. The expansion used in the laboratory tests consisted of a flanged connection between two vertically mounted pipes. The pipe diameters before and after the expansion were 0.496 and 0.996 inches, respectively. The sand used as the solid phase of the slurry had a specific gravity of 2.63 and varied in grain size between 0.54 millimeters and 1.19 millimeters. The characteristic fall velocity of the sand in still water was 0.320 ft/sec. The ratio (Q*) between the volumetric discharges of the sand and water phases for different test runs varied between 0 and 20.8 percent. The pressure recovery across the expansion for values of Q* less than 12 percent was found to agree satisfactorily with values predicted by the theoretically derived equations.
