AbstractTwo series of compression tests on concrete specimens were carried out in the experiments described in this thesis. The first series of tests used 4 inch cubes with different mixtures, water/cement ratios, grading of coarse aggregates and age of specimens. The second series of tests used prisms of various heights with different mixtures and grading of coarse aggregates. About 80 cubes and 36 prisms were tested. Curves are shown of axial stress against axial strain, and transverse strains of concrete at the top and mid-depth of the section. Curves of axial stress were also plotted against the transverse strain of the steel plate through which the load was transmitted. Similar curves for prisms of 4x4x8 in., 4x4x12 in., 4x4x16 in., and 4x4x20 in. were also recorded in the second series of tests. There is an apparent relationship between the secant modulus of elasticity and the height of the specimen. The variation of trans¬ verse strain along the vertical axes of specimens in both series appears to give fair agreement with Baker's lattice analogy (2). Results do not confirm the tests of Rowe & Zielinski (4), probably due to differences in the experimental arrangement.
