| Abstract | THE DESIGN AND BEHAVIOUR UNDER LOAD OF FIXED-ENDED HELICOIDAL STAIRCASES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE. Two half-scale models of an 80° helicoidal staircase were tested under uniform load. The models were scaled down from a prototype which was designed by Professor A. R. Cusens for the dining hall project of Chulalongkorn University. The main method of analysis is due to Morgan; other methods were also used for comparison. The models were fixed at both ends according to the design assumptions. For the first model, the percentage of steel was the same as for the prototype, but for the second model the reinforcement was somewhat reduced. During the tests, horizontal and vertical displacements at various points were recorded by dial gauges and observed by both theodolite and level. Strains were measured along both sides of the stairs at a number of stations using demountable mechanical gauges. The results are shown in graphical form, and the load tests were satisfactory except that the prevention of side sway of the columns supporting the upper platform was not complete. Slight side sway appeared to reduce loading capacities and caused a de¬ parture from design assumptions. The measured strains were compared to analytical values at the principal stations. The load factor at the maximum load for the first stair model was 4.88, and with the steel reduced in the second model, the load factor obtained at the collapse load was 3.62. |
